Big data is a term introduced in the early 2000's to refer to data sets whose size grew beyond the ability of the software tools of that time to process, typically in the order of many terabytes or petabytes for a single dataset. Big data sets are encountered by software architects in for instance web search and social media, by scientists in for instance meteorology, genomics, and politics and by analysts in for instance finance and business informatics.Data Science is an emerging field that is driven by the believe that scientific discoveries and commercial value are increasingly powered by our ability to explore big data sets. Data Science is an interdisciplinary field at the intersection of computer science, statistics, visualization and the social sciences. Data scientists dig for value in data to produce better models of human behaviour, such as better predictions for on-line marketing or better forecasts for elections. They are the driving force behind the innovation of internet companies like Google, Amazon, Yahoo, Facebook, Twitter, etc.Big Data and Data Science have become popular management terms in the past few years. Data is called “the new oil”. There is an increasing need for big data engineers and data scientists in job advertisements. The Dutch ICT Roadmap identifies “Data, data, data” as one of four main innovation themes, and the University of Twente responds to this new trend by offering new courses on Managing Big Data and by adapting their courses and Data Analysis. The CTIT Symposium Big Data and the emergence of Data Science addresses the multidisciplinary opportunities and challenges of Big Data from the perspectives of industrial research, academic research, and education. The list of invited speakers includes dr. Ravi Kumar (Google), dr.ir. Aiko Pras (University of Twente), dr.ir. Djoerd Hiemstra (University of Twente), prof.dr. Maarten de Rijke (University of Amsterdam) and dr. Nelly Litvak(University of Twente). As it has become a tradition, at the CTIT symposium the floor will also be given to PhD students from CTIT for short presentations and posters.
